“So You Think You CAn Dance” winner Joshua Allen taught the IDC at SERBA. His Urban Hip Hop style was a treat for all the 21 companies represented. Joshua also opened the Thursday evening emerging concert with a stage performance to an audience of 400 screaming teenages.
The IDC performed the new Stalling’s work “Perhaps” on the Saturday Evening Gala. The staging was phenominal with an opening that brought a dancer from the audience triggering the curtain to set the non-traditional stage. Motifs of improvisation warmed the traditional backstage areas. This advanced movement vocabulary was well received by the faculty, directors and dancers.
SERBA faculty included Robert Barnett- Artistic Director-Emeritus-The Atlanta Ballet; Shawn Black- San Elijo Dance and Music Academy; Tom Clower-Master Teacher and Choreographer; Deirdre Carberry- Assistant Professor of Dance-University of Cincinnati; and
Judy Rice- Associate Professor of Performing Arts- University of Michigan.
The Inwood Dance Company has been selected to perform on the Gala at the Southeastern Regional Ballet Festival in Montgomery, AL Saturday, May 9th. Adjudicator, Margo Sappington chose the company’s new work “perhaps” by choreographer, Lauri Stallings during her adjudication tour in February. Sappington described Stallings’ work as and intense and dense work full of surprises, which seems “shot from a gun”. This is Inwood’s third consecutive performance on the SERBA Gala performing Stallings’ works. Stallings’ past two works doublespeak and Port of Call won the National Choreography Recognition Awards. Director, Denna Smith and company will leave for Alabama on May 6th taking part in 3 days of master classes, workshops and performances.
The Inwood Performing Arts Company will begin a New Creative Movement Ballet Class for 3 & 4 year olds Monday, April 13th from 5:15-6:00pm. The 8 week session is $104. To register please call 304-229-3209.
